Mitzi came to us in 2009 on a cold November day in Mexico City. She legally crossed the border with her resident visa. Since then, she has become a U.S. citizen, has learned to meow in English with a Texas twang and is the undisputed queen of the house. Here’s her story:
My husband and I were outside of our shoe repair shop when we heard a faint meow coming out from a tire somebody had discarded in the middle of the sidewalk. And out came a tiny lynx point Siamese kitten who immediately approached my husband and begged him to take her with him. He picked her up to warm her up and so we went around the neighborhood trying to find her mother or her human family.
The employees of a nearby flour mill where several strays lived had never seen her. We left our telephone number with the shoe repair owner in case somebody went looking for her. That evening, we went to the store to get kitty supplies. Next morning, she went to the vet to get her shots, a bath (the vet probably needed to get his hands stitched together), a flea treatment and a clean bill of health. Nobody called to claim her, but ever since we picked her up, we knew she was part of our family (we are utter foster failures).
Three days later, after processing her kitty visa, she flew back to the U.S. with us. We paid a whopping $120 for her airfare. It was then that she showed her true Siamese colors and bit us and tried to scratch our eyes out and hollered all the way from Mexico City to Dallas. Upon arrival, all the customs officers were doting on her, although she did try to bite and scratch them. But with her magical powers she gave them a cuteness attack, so they forgot to process her entry to the U.S.
She has never forgotten her royal lineage dating back to the kingdom of Siam where Siamese kitties were reserved for the king and the royal family. She is persnickety and demanding and knows she was born to be adored.
Back home, she was welcomed by a committee of three kitties who immediately adopted her, probably to their regret because she immediately became the boss, turning all other cats into her servants. She would push the other kitties aside to eat their food, chase them out of the doughnut on the bed to claim it as her own, and even eat our pasta and drink water from my glass! Drinking from the kitty fountain is so beneath her. She wakes us up early every morning to order in her demanding way, that breakfast be served ASAP. She doesn’t tolerate company during breakfast and prefers to eat by herself, like the true royal she is.
Occasionally she plots mischief, like stealing my tuna salad and cheese cubes with her coven of kitty Bene Gesserits whom she commands with the power of the kitty voice.
However, over the years she has mellowed, and she has become a very sweet senior citizen.
