A photo of a cat shared online has people both terrified and confused. In the photo, it appears as if the cat is headless, and its head is in a nearby basket.
Of course, the reality of the photo isn’t that gruesome, instead, it’s an optical illusion. The cat owner, Reddit user i_spin_bubbles, shared the photo with the caption, “One head in one head out. Cat complete.”
Naturally, plenty of people were quick to take their guesses of what was actually going on in the photo to create the illusion of the “headless” cat.
One person wrote, “They do this with mirrors, right? The cat isn’t really sawed in half…”
Another said, “The dark secret behind this photo is the fact that they amputated the cats head and is now using it for internet points.”

Some people, however, saw the photo as more humorous than disturbing.
“CAT* *some assembly required,” one user wrote. Another commented on that saying, “IKEA Kat.”
Someone else commented, “This cat is assembled I N C O R R E C T L Y”
Some people immediately saw through the illusion and recognized the truth. In reality, it’s actually not one headless cat at all. It’s two cats!
One cat is in the basket with its head sticking out and the other is outside the basket with its head turned towards the wall.
The owner shared with The Dodo that the two cats, Koda and Lily, are nearly inseparable. They’re always playing or snuggling, and the photo was taken by chance. In the picture, the cats are actually being silly and playing with some ribbon.
Their owner regularly posts photos of the two on Reddit, but usually, you can tell that it’s two cats. They even posted an update showing both cats, saying, “(Update) I’m happy to provide proof that both heads are still attached.”
They posted another photo, saying, “heads with bodies.”
“[Koda’s] always sneaking up from behind and uses all his body weight to play fight. Lilly loves playing with everything she finds, especially playing fetch. She’s only 8 months old and literally half Koda’s size and weight, but plays rough with him all the time,” the owner said to The Dodo.
We’re glad that the mystery is solved. What do you think of the optical illusion? Let us know!
