Time capsules are an interesting thing. I remember when I was about seven years old, my school dug up a time capsule for their thirtieth anniversary. It didn’t contain much, it was just a small box with pencils and erasers from the 1960s when the school was founded.
But there are some people who like to bury little time capsules in their homes as a memory for others to find in the future. These usually contain very personal items and memories that give us a glimpse into the past. Personally, I think it would be fascinating to find a time capsule buried somewhere in my home. And someday, I may just make and hide one myself.
But for one man, Mathieu Stern, he ended up discovering a surprise that had been hidden inside his family home for the past 120 years! The time capsule even contained glass plate negative photos. Intrigued, Stern decided to develop them using the Cyanotype process. It took 20 minutes to develop the first photo, but once he did, Stern got a look into the past.
And it turned out that it was a picture of the family’s cat. And it wasn’t the only one. There were actually two cats and a dog who were in the pictures.

Not wanting the little girl’s pets to be forgotten, Stern ended up framing them and displaying them so that it could be remembered.
Stern’s cool discovery wasn’t just a trip into the past, it was a reminder that no matter the age, people love their pets.
And there are some things about humanity that never change – like our love for our pets.
