When a boy saw a horse drowning in freezing cold water, he knew that he had to do something to help. The horse was drowning, barely able to hold his head above water after being stuck for more than an hour before help arrived.
Cameron Martin is a 13-year-old boy who was being called a “little hero.” He earned that title after jumping into a canal on a farm in Norfolk Broads after seeing a horse named Domino struggling.
After Cameron was in the water, he had to work with all his might to keep the horse’s head above the surface. He was shouting for assistance. According to Metro News, he said:
“I was walking up to my field to see my pony when I noticed one of the owner’s horses wasn’t where it normally is.
I panicked, and then my first thought was to check the dyke. I saw it in the water trying to force itself under. I just did what I had to do.”
He had to spend an hour in the water yelling for help but eventually, some machinery arrived to help pull the horse out. Cameron said he was so exhausted that he slept for 24 hours, woke up for 5 hours, and then went back to sleep for another 22 hours.
Domino, on the other hand, got a good rub down and a hot bath.
Tanya Docwra-Smith was watching Cameron at the time. Metro reports that she said:
“We’d seen Cameron gesticulating on the side of the dyke from afar but honestly had no idea what he was doing.
He kept jumping back in the water and out again. It was all very scary.”
It seems as if it was more than just scary, he was holding the horse’s head above water to keep him from drowning!
Fortunately, Cameron is no stranger to horses so occasionally he would go to the side of the dyke to waive his hands and jump around to get some attention.
“The scene was horrible – the horse had weeds trapped under its nose and it was clearly in pain.
Cameron was freezing and distraught, but he was adamant that we save the horse’s life,” Tanya continued.
The owner of the horse is grateful for the efforts that Cameron put forward that day. He is the one who called him a little hero.
Tanya also said that most adults would not have done what he did. It seems as if Cameron has bonded with the horse and when they are on opposing sides of the dyke, Domino even gives a little whinny in his direction.
