There is nothing quite like watching birds that come around to hang out in your yard. You might even try attracting them by using some birdfeeders and they seem to appreciate your efforts. One of the types of birdfeeders that are very popular are for hummingbirds, and those beautiful little animals can certainly give you a lot of pleasure. If you do decide to use a hummingbird feeder, however, it’s important that you clean it regularly. If you don’t, you may actually be killing the hummingbird you are trying to feed.

World of Hummingbirds says that hummingbird feeders should be cleaned every third day or so.
If they are not cleaned properly, the nectar can begin to grow mold and mildew. These tiny little creatures are very susceptible to food contamination. If they are eating contaminated food, severe illness or even death can occur.

If you notice any discoloring in your hummingbird feeder, or if something doesn’t look right, then remove it and clean it without delay. All of the pieces can be taken apart to clean. Remove the nectar and discard it before rinsing thoroughly with hot water.
A small scrub brush can be used to remove any nectar that is left behind. It may be acceptable to use mild soap but there shouldn’t be soap left inside after you rinse the feeder.
Before reassembling the feeder make sure it is thoroughly dry. You can now add new nectar and be happy with knowing that hummingbirds can enjoy a snack in your backyard without being harmed.
