Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, and one dog is showing that beauty is more than just appearance. Phoenix is a sweet dog whose appearance often scares people because he doesn’t look like other dogs. He’s a sweetheart who is looking for someone to love him and look beyond his appearance.
Phoenix’s story began when he was abandoned as a stray for over a year. People saw him scavenging for food, but many didn’t intervene as soon as they got a look at his face. Sadly, he was referred to as being “freakish” or “horrifying” by many people. Thankfully, there were some people willing to help despite his appearance.
People with the Skiatook Paws & Claws Animal Rescue in Oklahoma fell in love with Phoenix as soon as they got called out by someone to help the poor dog. When the rescue saw what he looked like, that made absolutely no difference as they were determined to help save the poor dog.
When the rescue encountered Phoenix, they could tell that he had once been someone’s pet. Unfortunately, this meant that his previous owners had failed to properly care for him, given his appearance.
Carisa Ducharne from Skiatook Paws & Claws said, “He was skin and bones. You could see all his ribs. [He was] just so inflamed that he couldn’t close his eyes. He had so much swelling and inflammation in his face.”
The rescue has no idea what contributed to Phoenix’s appearance. When they found him, the pup wasn’t afraid of humans at all. He was a very happy dog who couldn’t stop wagging his tail. He just wanted to play and be loved. So whatever happened to him in his past, had absolutely no effect on his sweet personality.
Skiatook Paws & Claws post regular updates on Phoenix’s journey to recovery. There have been lots of love shown towards the dog as many people have donated towards his medical costs.
Family Animal Medicine has been working hard to help Phoenix as much as they can. They figure that the dog most likely has an autoimmune disease – though they’re not quite sure which one yet. There is good news in that Phoenix is going much better now than when he first arrived.
“He’s done nothing but improve every single day,” said Ducharne. “I wouldn’t say this is intentional trauma, but neglect is also abuse, and he was without a doubt neglected.”
Plenty of dog lovers have reached out to the rescue in order to get more information about him – including a few individuals who’ve expressed interest in offering him a home.
While the rescue is thrilled that so many people want to adopt Phoenix, however, they had to post an explanation that if Phoenix gets put up for adoption it’ll be a while away, as they want to make sure he’s completely healthy first.
If you are interested in donating towards Phoenix’s medical bills, or if you want to give to other dogs in need, you can go to Skiatook Paws & Claws Animal Rescue’s website to help.
