45-Year-Old ‘Angry’ Tortoise Tried To Burn His House Down On Christmas Day

If you spend any amount of time around a first responder, you realize that Christmas is a time of year with plenty of house fires. Some of it has to do with decorations but others have to do with people being home and perhaps a little careless.

It seems as if it is happening again this year, thanks to an angry tortoise. At 45 years of age, the tortoise decided to set a house on fire on Christmas day and was subsequently rescued from the blaze.

Fox News reports that the angry tortoise had a ‘very lucky Christmas day’ after being rescued from the home it set on fire in Essex, England.

It happened when a heat lamp was knocked over by the tortoise onto its bedding. The bedding then caught fire according to a statement by Essex Fire and Rescue.

The department had the following to say on Twitter: “This 45-year-old tortoise might look angry but it’s his lucky day. After he set his bedding alight his neighbor heard the smoke alarm and called us. Our on-call crews left their families to go extinguish the fire and gave him a very merry Christmas.”

An alert when out to authorities around 5 PM when an alarm was heard by the neighbors. Firefighters rolled up to the scene and found smoke filling the home with one of the rooms on fire.

According to a report from BBC, the fire was extinguished and the house was free of smoke within 25 minutes.

The picture of the tortoise has been quite popular on social media.

Watch Manager Gary Wain of the Great Dunmow Fire Station had the following to say: “This incident shows just how important it is to have smoke alarms on every level of your home – even if you’re not home they will alert anyone close by to the first sign of fire.”

“This tortoise has had a very lucky Christmas Day – he is 45 years young and will now hopefully continue to live a long and happy life thanks to working smoke alarms,” Wain added.
