Science confirms cats and dogs are good for your health, but adopting animals – versus buying them from a pet shop or breeder – offers additional benefits beyond the obvious perk of saving animals from euthanasia.
That’s why National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day, which is celebrated every year on April 30, was originally founded – to draw awareness to the millions of perfectly adoptable dogs and cats living in animal shelters across the U.S. In the spirit of NASPD, we’ve compiled a list of 10 reasons why you should adopt, not shop, for your new four-legged family — on April 30 and every day.

It’s hard to estimate America’s exact number of homeless dogs and cats, but the number reaches extends well into the tens of millions. Some estimates point to 70 million cats alone. Adopting animals from shelters is a great way to provide a needy animal with a safe, loving home.

Six to eight million dogs and cats enter the U.S. shelter system each year, according to the Humane Society of the United States. But almost half of those animals will be euthanized due to lack of space and funding.

Of the 3 million cats and dogs euthanized in shelters every year, approximately eighty percent, or 2.4 million, of those animals were healthy candidates for adoption whose lives would have been saved were they simply adopted into new homes.
