Inseparable Dog And Cat Surrendered To Shelter In Same Carrier

Cats and dogs have been enemies since the beginning of time, but some have put their differences aside and become friends.

A tabby cat named Kitty and a Chihuahua named Leila were surrendered by their owners to Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) in Boston. Their previous owners lost their home and could not find housing that would allow the inseparable pair. They surrendered them to the shelter in hopes they would find a loving home together.

The staff realized how bonded the pair was when they removed them from the carrier and attempted to put them in individual crates. Kitty, believed to be 6-years-old, would start screaming whenever 2-year-old Leila was taken away. Since the pair had just lost their home the shelter made an exception and put them together in a room.

Anna Rafferty-Fore, associate director of the MSPCA’s Boston adoption center said, “Leila is two years old and has lived every moment of her life with Kitty [age six]. They are each other’s best friend and keeping them together has made a very difficult situation much easier for them to handle.”

Realizing that the two shared an unbreakable bond, the shelter began a search for a family that would adopt them both. Andre and Elizabeth Marion of Sudbury, Massachusetts met the duo and instantly fell in love. The couple adopted Kitty and Leila and say they are settling in nicely.

The shelter posted, “Home at last…together! Kitty and Leila went home this weekend and we couldn’t be more grateful for all of your calls and emails about this lovable twosome. Here’s to homes for every pet — and pets in every home!”

Sadly, the number one reason MSPCA sees pets surrendered is because their owners are forced to move and cannot find housing that allows pets. “It breaks our heart every time and fires us up to resettle these pets into wonderful homes as soon as we can.”
